Amazonian Countries Agree to Strengthen Regional Cooperation

Foreign ministers and representatives ofColombia,Peru,Brazil,Bolivia,Venezuela,Guyana,SurinameandEcuadorsigned the Coca Declaration, by which they agreed to support initiatives as that presented byEcuadorand the establishment of the Regional Observatory for the Amazon.

Quito, May 6 (PL)- The representatives of the member countries of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (OTCA) agreed to widen and strengthen regional cooperation to promote the integral development of those territories.

Foreign ministers and representatives ofColombia,Peru,Brazil,Bolivia,Venezuela,Guyana,SurinameandEcuadorsigned the Coca Declaration, by which they agreed to support initiatives as that presented byEcuadorand the establishment of the Regional Observatory for the Amazon.

That Observatory will be a permanent forum that gathers institutions and authorities related to the study of the Amazon, a reference center for regional information on biodiversity, natural resources and socio-diversity of the region.

The Coca Declaration highlights the coordination of policies and joint strategies to safeguard the Amazonian territory, as well as the development of tools to strengthen the rights of indigenous peoples regarding their traditional culture.

The countries that signed the document also intend to facilitate the coordination between OTCA, the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR), the Andean Community (CAN), the Southern Common Market (MERCOSUR) and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).

The ministers, ambassadors and delegates supported the creation of the Network of Amazon Research Centers, from a project presented byEcuador, to exchange knowledge and researches.

During the meeting, the Declaration of Solidarity with the Government of theBolivarianRepublicofVenezuelawas also signed for President Hugo Chavez´s death.

Chavez was a leader who left us a legacy of real unity and Latin American integration, said Ecuadorian Foreign Minister Ricardo Patiño.
